Weekly weigh-in #25

in Weigh-in

Well, my weight loss has slowed WAY down this week, although I really don’t feel like I’ve done anything that differently this week in terms of eating and exercise. My eating has been good this week, though I did skip one of my runs because my left foot has been bothering me – more on that later.

Maybe it’s just that the time has come for me to step things up a notch and take it to the next level. The first 60+ pounds have come off with relative ease (I say “relative” because I don’t think it’s ever easy for anyone), and it very well may be that this last 20-25 pounds I’d like to lose is going to be a bit more work.

But you know what? I’m totally fine with that. I lost the first 60+ pounds in about 5 months, and if it takes me another 5 months (or more!) to lose the remaining 20-25 pounds, then that’s what it takes. I’m totally committed to my new healthy and active lifestyle, and I’m in this for the long haul. There’s no need to race to the finish line. I’ve got a whole lifetime of healthy living ahead of me :)

One thing I have noticed is that I tend to do better the fewer carbs and the more protein I have. I seem to do (mostly) fine with the carbs that come along naturally in fruits and veggies, I’m thinking more of breads and starchy foods like that. I’ve already largely cut those types of food out of my diet, but I think I’m going to work on doing so even more – as well as finding some more protein-rich foods to add to my repertoire – any good suggestions?

Anyways, here is my lackluster weigh-in for this week. It’s still a loss, so I’m not going to complain too much, but there’s also not much to brag about here:

  • Weight: 216.9 lbs
  • Pounds lost this week: 0.5
  • Pounds lost so far: 63.1
  • BMI: 27.85
  • Pounds to goal #1 of “overweight” BMI: 0.0 Goal met 4/9/10!
  • Pounds to goal #2 of “normal” BMI: 22.9

Ouch – My Foot!

Ever since my run Monday night, my left foot has been bothering me. I tweeted about it the other day, and based on my symptoms, got a few ideas of what the problem could be. It’s tight and tender across the mid-section of the top of my foot, which seems to indicate that it could either be a metatarsal strain/fracture, or tendinitis.

At this point, it doesn’t hurt too bad, just enough to cause some discomfort and make me think twice about going out for another run right away. In fact, I skipped my run Wednesday night to rest, and have been doing plenty of icing the last few nights. I’m staying positive that if I take it easy for a few more days, it will be good as new again.

My main concern at this point is the 1/2 marathon I was planning to run in August. I already had a very tight training schedule planned, so if I have to take much more than a week off from running, I’m not sure I’ll be ready in time. The good news is that I hadn’t actually registered and paid for it yet, so if my foot ends up sidelining me for much longer, at least I won’t be out any money. Still, I would really like to be able to do the 1/2 marathon – there aren’t many of them up here, and it won’t be until next spring until there’s another one locally. But, I realize how important it is to take care of my body and not “push past the pain”, so if I’ve gotta sit this one out, so be it. There will always be others, and I’ve been bitten by the running bug, and I’m not going to be giving up on running anytime soon!

I had a similar pain in my right foot about 2 weeks before my first half marathon. I took a whole week off and it got to feeling better and then I did my low mileage taper week and then the half. So I’d say give it a week or even two weeks and see how it feels. You can still sign up for that half and walk it if you have to. Or maybe walk the first half and run the last half or vice versa. I took a couple of weeks off from running and was surprised at how easily I was able to get back into it, so don’t let that scare you.

I attributed my foot problems to overtraining. I was running every day up to that point and pushing myself to go faster each time. I’m not sure what your training schedule is like, but if you’re doing what I was doing, I’d recommend cutting it to 3 or 4 days a week.

I hope you get to feeling better soon. keep up the good work!

Try some kines tape on that foot. I love the stuff.

I hope your foot is feeling better soon!

I think that a .5 lb loss for the week is good. I really like your mindset about it not being a race to the finish line! You are going to eat healthy and exercise even if you never lose another pound, so what’s the rush! But knowing you you’ll probably kick things up a notch and be down more next week! :)

Okay I’m not sure if you got as much pleasure out of writing this as I did reading because all I could think was “how kick ass is it that he’s got foot pain because he’s a runner and not because he’s lugging around SIXTY EXTRA POUNDS!!!!”

That’s some hardcore stuff right there Mr. Brandon!

I don’t know if you have read the book BORN TO RUN yet, but if you haven’t: download it, rent it, borrow, steal, barter, hook yourself out to get a copy.

As a runner, it was one of the most influential reads I have ever…read. It made me excited to be out of breath. To be a penguin. To not only finish last, but finish with pride.

I am a runner. No one can take that away from me. Not matter what.

Read this book. You may become a barefoot runner. You may not. You will definitely find a whole new appreciation for the daily movements that we ask our bodies to preform without question or ache.

Bodies are remarkable. To repay them, we need only feed, shelter, hydrate, and rest them optimally. And there comes in moderation.
