This has been a busy and stressful week for me at work, so I’m going to just cut right to the chase with my numbers for this week:
- Weight: 221.0 lbs
- Pounds lost this week: 1.5
- Pounds lost so far: 59.0
- BMI: 28.37
Pounds to goal #1 of “overweight” BMI: 0.0Goal met 4/9/10!- Pounds to goal #2 of “normal” BMI: 27.0
My weight loss was a little slower again this week, but it’s still headed in the right direction, so I’m not going to complain too much! My wife got really sick at the end of last week, so I ended up staying home Thursday and Friday to take care of the kids, giving me an impromptu 5-day weekend. I’m definitely getting better at handling the weekends, but still not great, so I’m sure the long weekend had at least something to do with my weight loss this week. And of course we’ve got another long weekend this weekend with Memorial Day.
Couch to 5k Week 6
While week 6 of Couch to 5k has been going really well, I tend to agree with Jess’ comment from last week that it’s time to move on. Not because I’m not doing well or because I don’t like the program (quite the opposite in fact), it’s just that I feel like it’s time to move past C25K and start running at my own pace. Lately I’ve found myself not really following the program that closely anyways, skipping some of the walking intervals, running past the end of the program, etc.
One thing I will give C25K credit for, though, is forcing me to slow down and pace myself. I know how I am, and if I hadn’t had a structured program like C25K to follow, especially in those early weeks, I would have been pushing myself too hard too soon, and probably would have ended up hurting myself. All that being said, I feel like I’m ready to get out there and start doing my own thing – so that’s exactly what I’m going to do!
So long C25k, it’s been nice knowing you!
I’m going to be watching my weekly mileage closely, and be careful not to push myself too much. I’ve heard that a good rule of thumb is to not increase by more than 10% per week, so I’ll be using that as my general guide.
A Beautiful Night for a Run
Wednesday night was absolutely beautiful, and lucky me, just happened to be my night for a run! One of the things I love about Alaska is that even on a perfectly clear and sunny day like that, it was only 65°F, which was just about perfect for a run. Technically, it was W6D2 of C25K for me, but as I mentioned above, I skipped the walking interval in the middle, and ran an extra 5 minutes at the end, for a total of 2.95 miles of straight running in 28 minutes! I found a nice trail through the woods that I had never been on before, so I did slow down for a few brief moments to take a couple pictures:
Weekend Warriors Challenge
The next Weekend Warriors Challenge is already right around the corner! Unfortunately for me, I was looking at a calendar the other day, and realized that I’m leaving on my trip to New Orleans right in the middle of Weekend Warriors weekend! This is going to make it very difficult for me to host the challenge this time around, since I won’t really be able to keep up with everyone’s progress and have a results post up the following Monday. Fortunately, Jeremy from Stellar Path has graciously agreed to host the challenge this month! Jeremy has been asking me for a couple months now to do a Star Trek themed challenge, and that actually was my plan. But when I realized that I wasn’t going to be able to host the challenge this month, I asked Jeremy if he’d like to host the Star Trek themed challenge himself, and I was happy he said yes!
So keep an eye out over on Jeremy’s blog if you’re not already subscribed, I’m sure he’ll have more details on this month’s challenge coming out soon.
Have a happy and healthy Memorial Day weekend everyone!

Despite a stressful week, you posted a loss. Nice! Hope your wife is feeling better!
The best choice I made in my running was abandoning C25K. I agree that it’s an awesome program and without it I wouldn’t be where I am in my running today.
I wish you luck in your running sans C25K!
You are doing great! I support your running your own program and not increasing more than 10% as you said. The biggest problem with a running program is injuries. If you are careful you will get all the benefits from running and minimize injuries. I really like that you are not running on too hard a surface.
By the way I did a family cruise to Alaska and it was the best family vacation we ever had! The US is lucky that Alaska is part of the country.

You are awesome Brandon! Great loss for the week.
I will be in on the WWC again so I’ll keep an eye out on Jeremy’s blog.
I did c25k for a week before I threw in the towel
. I was used to doing my own thing so following a program like that really wasn’t going to work for me. Congrats on your loss this week, and I hope your wife is feeling better.
Well done! I’m hoping to start the C25K next week and I’m also hoping not to kill my knees by doing it. I’m impressed that you’re at the point where you don’t need to follow it anymore. 28 minutes of straight running is fantastic!
And congrats on your loss!

I’m running my 2nd HM tomorrow and used the following format to work towards it in 3 months:
Run 3 day a week
Tues 4miles, Thurs 4 miles, Sun….long run*
*depended on Jeff Galloway’s HM training program
When the short runs become easy then make one of them a speed day and the other a hill day.
I used this twice to success but like you said about weight loss there’s an equally different number of ways to reach your running goals. Good luck with your new game plan!
Wow, man, a loss is a loss–I’d take that! And yeah, Bramdon, it sounds like you don’t need C25K anymore, but it was very useful at the beginning. Use what works, forget what doesn’t, right?

Sorry for the late reply. I think it’s fantastic that you decided to move on from c25k. Some of us needed it all the way to the end and some of us don’t. I think you’re first 5k is totally going to be sub 30 and that makes me squeeeeeeeee!!!
Thanks for making sure WWC gets underway. I’m going out of town (you too if I remember) for the first time since starting this journey and it’s just what I need to keep me focused!
