Weekly weigh-in #14: Overweight edition

April 9, 2010

in Weigh-in

I’m going to cut right to the chase – I met my first goal!!! This means that I’m officially “overweight”, at least according to my BMI. I never thought I’d be so happy to be overweight! :)

I still didn’t quite live up to my former 3.6 pounds per week standard, but I’m more than happy with my numbers this week:

  • Weight: 231.6 lbs
  • Pounds lost this week: 2.4
  • Pounds lost so far: 48.4
  • BMI: 29.73
  • Pounds to goal #1 of “overweight” BMI: 0.0 Goal met!
  • Pounds to goal #2 of “normal” BMI: 37.6

Having met my first goal, I am immediately reminded of this video:

GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Couch to 5K

In other news, I started the Couch to 5K program this week. I just completed the first week of the program last night, and overall I think it’s gone really well so far. I’m planning to write up a post this weekend where I’ll talk a little more about what it’s been like, and some of the challenges I’ve had with running, so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, I’ve been posting my progress over on Dailymile, so you can check out my profile over there if you’re interested, and please add me as a friend if you’re on that site too.

The Nordic Track Saga

We have still heard NOTHING back from Nordic Track after our elliptical broke Monday night. At this point, either they are just completely ignoring us, or somehow our email mysteriously got lost. My wife is going to try contacting them again today, but if we still haven’t heard anything by Monday, we’re going to try returning it to Costco, as several of you suggested. I would really be impressed with Costco if they actually take it back!

After that, we’re not quite sure what to do – we’re skeptical about buying another elliptical, so we’re thinking of getting a treadmill. The other option is getting gym memberships. The only problem with that option is the closest gym that has a reasonable membership fee is about 15-20 minutes away from our house. Once you consider the extra driving time, that adds 30-40 minutes to your workout. And with working 10 hour days and having 2 young kids, time is very precious around our house these days. Any thoughts? Do you workout at home or at a gym?

Anybody have big plans this weekend? Mostly I’m just looking forward to relaxing, and then starting week 2 of Couch to 5K on Sunday night. Everyone have a healthy and happy weekend!

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude! This is awesome. I wish I could see the vid though (stupid work computer)! And you’ve been rockin c25k from what I’ve seen. Awesomeness all around.

As for the NordicTrack saga, get down to their office and kick some ass. You can take ‘em. Bring a couple polar bears if need be.

Congrats to you too then, it’s an awesome feeling!

Sean April 9, 2010 at 7:51 am

Congrats man, that is so awesome man. GOAL BABY!!!

As for NordicCrap, perhaps we should start a twitter movement to get some response from them?

I’ve had it with Nordic Track. After almost a week with no response, we took it back to Costco today and got a full refund, no questions asked.

Ryan Sullivan April 9, 2010 at 8:54 am

Overweight? Dude, you’ve just become healthier than 66% of Americans. Nice work man! Like, really nice work!

The NordicTrack response sounds pretty typical of a big company. I have seen Costco take back some crazy stuff though so it would be worth a shot. I might call them first though and explain the situation before you go through all the trouble of moving it around. They also might have a way to contact NordicTrack directly.

Brandon April 10, 2010 at 11:19 pm

Thanks man, feels great to be overweight! (wait, did that rhyme…)

Costco is freakin’ awesome! We called them on Friday to find it if they would take the return or not, and they said no problem. We returned it today for a full refund with no questions asked.

AndrewENZ April 9, 2010 at 10:06 am

Awesome! It is funny celebrating being overweight but I think we can all identify!

Thanks! I’m sure you’ll be there too before you know it :)

Erin April 9, 2010 at 12:03 pm

WAY TO GO, man! So happy for you! :-) One step closer to “normal.”

I have a gym membership, and my gym is 25 minutes away. There is a gym of the same name right across the street from my office, and 10 minutes from home, but I’ve had such issues with them that I’ll never go back unless they get new management/owners! I would love to have an elliptical or treadmill at home so during the brutal winters I can workout at home, but currently, most of my workout DVDs and equipment is collecting dust. I prefer the gym.

I’m bookmarking that video!!! That is COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLL!!!! :-)

Brandon April 10, 2010 at 11:21 pm

Thanks Erin! Yeah, we’re still not sure what we’re going to do. The gym memberships sound nice, but given our choices doesn’t seem very likely at this point. My wife would really like to get another elliptical, but I’m just a little hesitant after this experience.

Aimee April 9, 2010 at 4:12 pm

Congrats on hitting your goal, that’s great! I’m interested to read about your Couch to 5K experience, I’m thinking about giving it a try.

Good luck with the elliptical problem. Costco has always been great with me as far as returns.

Have a nice weekend!

Carla April 9, 2010 at 6:52 pm

First I want to congratulate you on meeting your first goal!!! It brought a big smile to my face, even though I knew you would reach it this week.

I also think it’s important to have a gym that’s close to home. You have to make working out easy to do, not more difficult. Or, since it’s convenient for you with small kids and all, you should buy another machine for home. I know our Visa cards have some kind of insurance for things like that, when they break, etc., so maybe that’s an option with the NordicTrack. Costco has also been really great at taking things back.

Brandon April 10, 2010 at 11:23 pm

Thanks Carla! Costco was really great about taking it back. We’re still not quite sure what we’re going to do at this point. My wife would really like another elliptical, I’m just a bit hesitant after what’s just happened, but we’ll see…

Joey April 9, 2010 at 11:53 pm

The only equipment you need is a good pair of running shoes. Run to the gym and back and you’ll have your daily workout for free.

Ha ha, very true Joey. I’ve been working on that lately, starting week 2 of C25K this week!

Jeremy Logsdon April 10, 2010 at 5:46 am

That’s amazing! I don’t even know what else to say for you except congrats! And give me one more reason to hate you… :) You are going to need to turn in your obese club card, btw.

As far as the gym goes, I love it. Our gym is about ten minutes from the house. Gym before this one was about 15 minutes or so. I personally would not be able to work out as hard at home, because I want weights, but I’d also much rather have a good home gym, too. Issue for me is one of both cost and space, as I have no money to buy a good home gym, and even if I did, no place to put one.

Brandon April 10, 2010 at 11:25 pm

Thanks Jeremy, I’m happy to give up my obese club card :)

I kind of feel the same way as you, if I’m going to go the home gym route, I’d really like some weights too. But then you get into the issues of cost and space, both of which are somewhat limited at this point.

Scott April 10, 2010 at 6:25 am

The video is most appropriate for this accomplishment. Way to go man! I will echo some sentiments from above and say many of us are looking forward to the day when we can fall into that overweight catagory. Looking forward to the C25K update also. I am looking to get started with it soon.

Lynne Garcia April 10, 2010 at 6:53 am

That is so great! Great job. Before too long you will be saying GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL again!

I don’t have any equipment at home. Most of the time I work out in my gym on the way to work. I too work 10 hour days but I have a wonderful, very flexible boss that allows me to “report officially to work” at the gym. So… I am scheduled from 5AM – 3PM but I start my work day at the gym. In exchange I skip my lunch hour and if anything ever comes up late (which isn’t too often) I stay late. I am very very luck. I also walk/run outside around the house some.

Take care and keep up the awesome work!

Brandon April 10, 2010 at 11:26 pm

That’s great that you have such an understanding boss that lets you report to work at the gym :) My boss is pretty flexible, but not quite that much!

Rita April 10, 2010 at 7:05 am

Congrats! Overweight rocks. WTG!

I do both gym and home. I have videos an elliptical and a bike here if I can’s make it but love the gym when I can go. Being a parent and just a plain old busy human being, sometimes the gym doesn’t happen. I think treadmills are just a whole lot more versatile too, I wish I bought one instead of my elliptical.

Brandon April 10, 2010 at 11:27 pm

I’m definitely leaning toward a treadmill, but my wife really likes using an elliptical, so we’ll see…

Great news on the elliptical. Also, I’ve just started Week Four of C25K and have been tracking my progress over on my site. I’m psyched, because I’ll “graduate” 10 days before Memorial Day, and there are a ton of 5K races that weekend.

That’s awesome, definitely good timing to “graduate” from the C25K program, and have the opportunity to go out for a “real” 5K race :)
