Weekly weigh-in #12: Star Wars Edition

March 26, 2010

in Weigh-in

Well, it’s been another busy week around here, but I managed to keep up with both my healthy eating and exercise, so I consider that a victory.

So, why did I title this week’s weigh-in the Star Wars Edition? For one reason or another, Star Wars kept popping up in my life this week. There was Erin’s post on Wookiee Cookies, Steve tweeted about whether you’d rather join the Nerd Fitness Empire or Rebellion (Rebellion, of course!), and last weekend, we went to the Star Wars exhibit currently showing at the Anchorage Museum.

The Star Wars exhibit was pretty sweet. They had lots of actual props from the movies, and a bunch of stuff on the science behind Star Wars. There was even a life-size recreation of the bridge of the Millennium Falcon, but there was a 90 minute wait to get into that, so we passed. I took some photos with my cell phone – I didn’t realize they allowed taking photos, otherwise I would have brought my good camera.

Ok, enough with the Star Wars geek-out, on to the weigh-in!

  • Weight: 236.6 lbs
  • Pounds lost this week: 3.6
  • Pounds lost so far: 43.4
  • BMI: 30.37
  • Pounds to goal #1 of “overweight” BMI: 3.6
  • Pounds to goal #2 of “normal” BMI: 42.6

Another good week for me, though it’s interesting to see that this is the third week in a row that I’ve lost 3.6 pounds. I guess if I’m going to get myself into a rut, this one isn’t so bad :) It also seems like too much of a coincidence that I have exactly 3.6 pounds to go to reach my first goal!

Challenge Updates

I’ve been working on a few other challenges this week. After today, I’ll have completed week 4 of the 200 situps challenge, which has been going really well so far. I’ve also been doing the plank challenge this week from Half of Jess. It’s been a tough challenge, but I’ve really enjoyed doing it, and I can already tell that I’m getting stronger. If you want to give it a go yourself, try doing 3 sets of 45 second planks with 30 seconds rest in between. It was a lot harder than I thought! Don’t know what a plank is? Check out this video.

WP-DailyBurn

Last week, I saw a tweet from Mac about wanting a WordPress widget for DailyBurn, similar to the iGoogle widget that they already have. When I saw that, I thought to myself “hey, I’m a programmer, I could totally do that!” And so I spent the next couple days working with the DailyBurn API and creating a WordPress widget that displays your recent stats. It’s basically done at this point, I’m just waiting on the folks at WordPress to enable my account for publishing plugins. As soon as that happens, you’ll be seeing another post from me with more details.

Weekend Warriors

Don’t forget, next weekend is the next installment of the Weekend Warriors Challenge. I realized a week or so ago that it coincides with Easter weekend, which I actually consider to be a really good thing. Easter is one of those holidays where I tend to really overdo it, between the big meals and all the Easter candy. So keep your eye out on Monday for a post officially announcing the challenge.

We had a great turnout last time around, and I hope to have even more this time!

I hope everyone has a great weekend – may the force be with you! (sorry, I had to fit another Star Wars reference into this post for good measure)

Well, the Star Wars exhibit is in town until April 25, so you’ve still got plenty time to make it :)

Steve March 26, 2010 at 8:38 am

Duuude! You rock

And btw, you look hella thin in that one photo. Holy crap!

Brandon March 26, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Thanks man, I was pretty happy with how I looked in that photo too. I haven’t been taking any “official” progress pics, but I’ve been thinking of posting some side-by-side shots of recent pics like that one, compared with some photos of me back in December around the time my daughter was born, just before my journey began.

REBELLION OF COURSE! Who the hell would pick the Empire?! Massive fail on their part.

If you haven’t seen the funny Porkins youtube vid, let me know so I can send it to you. That’s awesome about the exhibit. I want Yoda to train me. If he did, I’d be doing 5 bajillion push-ups in no time.

Nice job on the weigh-in! I’m assuming manhandling the polar bear had something to do with it!

Brandon March 26, 2010 at 2:28 pm

You’ll have to send me the link for the Porkins video you’re talking about – I tried searching on YouTube, but there were a bunch of different ones.

Yes, adding polar bear wrestling to my exercise repertoire has definitely helped with my weigh-ins. I would definitely recommend it!

Anyone who can lose 3.6 pounds for 3 consecutive weeks and then only have 3.6 pounds until they reach a goal is no wookie when it comes to weight loss……….you sir are a professional!

Great job on your progress and may the force be with you!

Brandon March 26, 2010 at 2:29 pm

Thanks Scott, I certainly can’t complain about the progress I’ve been seeing recently!

beej March 26, 2010 at 1:51 pm

That’s great! 3.6 for three weeks? I’m pushing for 3.7 this week for you, though. Sorry! I want you to beat that goal!!

Kick butt.
.-= beej´s last blog… Another short one–just the stats =-.

Brandon March 26, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Ha ha, thanks man – I’ll really push to squeeze out that extra 0.1 pound this week, just for you!

Vanessa R March 26, 2010 at 2:18 pm

I saw the title Star Wars edition on Twitter and had to click. Good job on the 3.6 – wish I could lose that much every week!

Now I need to go look at this twohundredpushups thing too. And Nerd Fitness???? Thats where I belong.

Keep it up!

Brandon March 26, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Thanks Vanessa – glad I caught your eye with the Star Wars title :) Nerd Fitness is an awesome site, you should definitely check it out if you haven’t seen it!

Marissa March 26, 2010 at 2:37 pm

Great Job! I will deffinatly be down for the weekend warriors. I am hosting Easter this year so it will be a challenge.

Carla March 26, 2010 at 3:31 pm

When I looked at my calendar today I realized that the next instalment of the WWC is going to be on Easter and at first I thought I didn’t want to do it. But then I said to myself, “Why not? Just so you can pig out like crazy and not have to be accountable???” So I have decided that I’m definitely in again for the challenge next weekend!!!

Great job on the loss again this week – I know you can make that first goal next week!!!
.-= Carla´s last blog… Eating well feels right =-.

Brandon March 26, 2010 at 8:18 pm

Yeah, that’s kind of what I figured too – instead of trying to make excuses for why it was ok to pig out on Easter, I’ll be looking for ways to stay on top of my game. Looking forward to having you as part of the challenge again!

Joe March 26, 2010 at 4:27 pm

I was quickly becoming a fan of your stuff until I find out you aren’t willing to wait 90 minutes to get into the Millennium Falcon. You should have thought of it as a mini-workout. Like running in place but standing in spot or something.
Great Pics, I’m jealous.

Brandon March 26, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Ha ha, sorry to disappoint man. The exhibit was a lot of fun, but it wasn’t super huge, so it probably took us less than 90 minutes to go through all the rest of it. Seemed silly to spend 90 minutes standing in line to only get a few minutes inside the Millennium Falcon. What is this, Six Flags?

Craig March 26, 2010 at 8:25 pm

omgbecky…in that pic–you’re so skinny! Umm, solongfatass? he’s GONE! WOW. Another amazing week–congrats! I think this deserves a standing ovation!!! :)
Damn those planks are so hard…I’m hovering between 20-30 seconds and struggling, but I still do them every night!

And, don’t hit me but…never seen Star Wars. (ducks and hides)…just looks too confusing for me! lol

Brandon March 26, 2010 at 9:52 pm

Thanks man, makes me happy to hear other people say that!

But OMG… you’ve NEVER seen Star Wars? Well, if you ever do decide to watch Star Wars, I would definitely recommend watching them in the order of theatrical release. If you watch them in the “real” order, the first 3 will probably turn you off from the whole thing before you ever get to the last 3, which are the good ones.

Mary Lutz March 27, 2010 at 10:48 am

HUGE Star Wars fan here!!! Sooo jealous! Congrats on the loss. 3.6, 3.6, 3.6….not a coincidence!!! Everything comes in 3′s so something good will come out of this :)

I am all for more pictures, that would be great. And you do look awesomely slender! And very jazzed about that plugin, you’re gonna answer another prayer with that one.

Brandon March 28, 2010 at 2:34 pm

Thanks Rita! I’ll try to get some more before & after pics posted sometime soon!

Chad March 27, 2010 at 7:25 pm

Wow, Brandon! You’re about to leave obesity behind for good! That’s awesome!

I certainly hope so – thanks Chad!
