I’m guessing that many of you, like me, work a desk job. This means many long hours of doing nothing but sitting at a computer. That doesn’t exactly lend itself to a healthy lifestyle.
Is this your idea of a "healthy" snack at work?
Sitting (mostly) still for 8 hours or more at a time is probably one of the least healthy activities you can do. From a recent New York Times article:
Your chair is your enemy.
It doesn’t matter if you go running every morning, or you’re a regular at the gym. If you spend most of the rest of the day sitting — in your car, your office chair, on your sofa at home — you are putting yourself at increased risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, a variety of cancers and an early death.
Combine that with temptations from the vending machine and assorted cakes and other junk food that co-workers tend to bring in, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for disaster.
So what’s a health-minded person to do when they’re stuck sitting at a desk 40 hours (or more) per week? Here are a few ideas to help keep you healthy at work:
- The New York Times article I referenced above suggests standing at your desk. Depending on your exact situation, this may or may not be very realistic.
Compared to sitting, standing in one place is hard work. To stand, you have to tense your leg muscles, and engage the muscles of your back and shoulders; while standing, you often shift from leg to leg. All of this burns energy.
- Use an exercise ball as your chair. I’ve heard this one a lot. The basic idea is that the constant balancing act your body does keeps your muscles working all day, even if only a little bit at a time. If you can’t get your employer to spring for one, an exercise ball isn’t that expensive ($19 on Amazon), so you could just buy your own. If you need any more convincing, here are 10 Reasons to Use an Exercise Ball as Your Chair.
- Get up and move. Just because you’re stuck working at a desk all day doesn’t mean you can’t get up and move a bit. When you get up to use the bathroom or get a drink of water, take a quick lap around the building. Unless you work at the Pentagon, this will likely only take an extra few minutes, but can make a big difference. Do you get a couple 15 minute breaks during the day? Go outside and take a quick walk around the block.
- Avoid the vending machine like the plague. Face it, there’s nothing healthy for you in there. Pack some healthy snacks at home so you won’t be tempted by a growling stomach.
- Just say NO to the cake. If your office is anything like mine, it seems like someone is bringing in a cake at least once a week – birthdays, retirements, babies, whatever. You may feel “guilted” into partaking because you don’t want to offend either the person who brought it in, or the person that’s being celebrated, but trust me – that cake isn’t going to do your healthy lifestyle any favors. And unless there’s only a couple people in your office, most likely nobody will even notice if you don’t have a piece.
How many of you work desk jobs? What tricks do you use to stay healthy and active while sitting at a desk all day?

Hi, my name is Brandon. I am a 28 year old husband and proud father of 2. When our daughter was born in December 2009, I weighed 290 pounds. I decided right then and there that I needed to get healthy for my kids, if not for myself.

I don’t work a desk job, in fact, my kids are my job and keep me pretty much moving all day long. But, in a former life I was a teacher and did sit during the day a bit. These are some great tips to get people up and moving!

I can’t help but think of Dwight Schrute sitting on his “fitness orb” at the office and trying to sell Jim on the idea. “It strengthens your core, makes you better at sex.” I still laugh hard when I think about it. Unfortunately there’s no link to be found of the video online. I hope you’ve seen it!
These are good tips considered I’m in the very same boat you are.

Yes, I know EXACTLY what you’re talking about – funny stuff!
When I worked at an office the food temptations were just unbareable and this was often my downfall. Even if you don’t work at an office, there are constant temptations and excuses to eat junk food, sometimes it just seems like there is no getting away from it!

Definitely trapped at a desk at least for 75% of the day, some days more.
I’ve been planning to use a stability ball for a while. I may do that tomorrow!

I bought myself an exercise ball to sit on but it’s in my basement at home. I’m going to bring it in to work!

I’m in a job that keeps me chained to a desk all day. I’m lucky that it is mostly work from home – so I have no excuse not to try out some of these tips and bringing my lonely exercise ball up from the basement. Thanks for sharing – I’ll give them a try.

I imagine working from home is a bit of a blessing and a curse when it comes to staying healthy. I know at least for me, when I’m at home, there are many more temptations for snacking and overeating.
Absolutely! It happened to me today – left over cookies, which I blogged about. I’m hoping blogging keeps me honest. But its tough.

It is tough – I do find that blogging helps keep me honest, so hopefully that works for you too.
I’m not at a desk job at the moment but I start law school in August. I can only imagine that it’ll be similar to a desk job, except I’d be reading about contracts and torts (ugh.)
Thanks for the good tips on how to take breaks. I used to sit in an exercise ball at home. I think I’m going to bust that thing out and blow it up again. It’s great for core strength plus when you get REALLY bored, you can start doing crunches.
I love the exercise ball idea. I’m going to float the idea at work and see what happens.
I aim to bring my lunch and snacks everyday. When I do, I stay on track pretty well. When I don’t, anything is fair game – vending machine, unhealthy restaurant meals, etc.

Oh…I guess thats kind of the point, eh? D’oh!
Great post, and awesome tips
And hopefully Ryan can find that fitness orb video (haven’t seen one episode of The Office).

Oh man, you are missing out! Not ONE episode of The Office, what’s wrong with you man?!?
I’m at my desk about 80% of the time. The other 20% is running around. I try to make the most of that 20% by power walking my rounds – hence my nickname of the “click clack lady.” They always know when I’m coming…and if I find myself getting sluggish throughout the day, I make rounds more often. Keeps my students on their toes, too!
I do not carry cash or change to avoid the vending machine temptations…and I keep my desk stocked with healthy options – right now I’ve got protein powder, cereal, oatmeal, nut butter, hot tea, soup, and bananas.

I work at a desk all day too. I try to move around a lot. Thankfully I have stuff like unloading supplies/orders to do often so that’s something. Plus I never eat from the vending machines I always bring my afternoon snack with me, usually a granola bar or Special K bar or something like that.

I’m at a desk almost all day, and I’ve thought about the exercise ball, but I’ve never actually tried it. I can just see myself in the midst of a serious meeting rolling off the ball at an inopportune moment! LOL

Great reminders – it *is* tough to stay active when you work a desk job (as I do). I am going to rethink the idea of an exercise ball as a chair…

I’ve worked at a desk job my entire post college life. It’s really hard making sure you to eat right and moving around. Some things I do are religiously leaving the building for lunch and also taking afternoon coffee walks for 5-10 minutes outside. I also fill up my water bottle often and as soon as it’s empty I get up and fill it again. This forces me to move around a bit. Just make sure you don’t replace that water bottle with soda
Great writeup and good reminders for everyone stuck indoors every day.

If you want to get really serious (and you have some extra flow burning a hole in your pocket), there’s always the Treadmill Desk.
It’s half brilliant, and half absolutely ridiculous. But I can’t help but want one.

Not only do I work a desk job at work, I do freelance so I work a desk job most nights when I’m at home too. I recently discovered that four trips around the building is exactly one mile, so twice a day I get up and go for a walk. That’s at least two miles a day not including my morning gym routine. My office also has “healthy” vending machines stocked with only baked chips, low fat candies, and trail mix. They have the normal ones too but having the varied options helps me make better choices.
